Introduction

In this post, In my time at university we would cover a lot of content and study resources from the Sustainable Development Goals which are set from 2015-2030. These goals set several inspiring initiatives to end world hunger, gender equality and environmental destruction. I feel it is good to study the past. I will analyse the millennium development goals created by the United Nations set from September 2000-2015. the data from these statistics are set from the year 1990.

Here are the 8 goals:

1) To eradicate extreme poverty and hunger.

2) Achieve universal primary education.

3) Promote gender equality and empower women.

4) Reduce child mortality.

5) Improve maternal health.

6) Combat HIV/Aids, malaria and other diseases.

7) Ensure environmental sustainability.

8) Global partnership for development.

Progress

These goals were set and given an end date in 2015, when these goals would be reviewed.

By 2005, they had made improvements but an turning point was when the IMF and World Bank set an Multilateral Debt Relief Initiative and received extra funding from G8 countries. This includes a $4.5 billion debt relief for Somalia in 2023. The debt relief fund still runs today and has alleviated more than 100 billion of debt from 37 countries since 1996.

In 2015

The major achievements of these goals were a halving of those people living in extreme poverty (less than $1.25 dollars a day), enrolment of primary education increased to 91% (up from 83%), child mortality rates fell by 45% since 1990 ( where statistics were benchmarked). One of the biggest improvements for me was in Goal 6 in combatting the spread of HIV aids.

The number of adults and children newly infected with HIV globally declined 40% since 2000. The UN has set a further goal of ending the AIDS epidemic by 2030. This has been mentioned in the new SDG sustainable goal 3. The number of people with access to clean water increased by 2.6 billion people. 2.1 billion people have increased their access to open clean sanitation. However more Zimbabwean women have contracted HIV due to sexual violence and people in the UN still need to step up more to protect these marginalised people.

Conclusion

We are need to be better in helping the progress of humanity and we have achieved great things, but there is much more to do. We should be inspired by the past but motivated by the present and future.
